"There's never been a time when improvisation was given the respect it deserves. By virtue of the holistic quality of it, it takes everything to do it. It takes real time, no editing possible. It takes your nervous system to be on alert for every possible thing in a way that cannot be said for any other kind of music." -- Keith Jarrett
The mind
Study music theory and harmony. Expand musical vocabulary through listening, emulation and exploration. Begin making music, not reading music.
The body
Through physical conditioning, master your body and gain control of your instrument as if it is an extension of your body, so that the music in the mind can be channeled without any physical inhibitions.
The soul
Live life, and open your eyes to what is around you. Pay attention to relationships between people as much as you do to relationships between musical notes. Observe your ego, and release yourself from it. Your emotions and experiences will be unconsciously reflected in your playing.
